John Marshall

Principal

John has lived and breathed healthcare from a very young age. Growing up in a family who works in the industry, he knows the challenges and rewards first-hand.

John’s first job out of college was with SilverStone Group and, while it might have been accidental that he found our industry so soon in his career, the reasons John remains in insurance are easy to understand. From business owners to doctors and lawyers, his family history includes generations committed to serving and advising others and understanding the needs of the customer. John’s entrepreneurial spirit drives him to find more efficient ways to identify and address risk to benefit with his clients, as well as making sure those risks that must be financed are designed properly and priced accordingly.

John is head of the Professional Risk Services practice area for SilverStone Group. With over 20 years of experience, John has developed an expertise in professional liability insurance and risk management, working with industries with significant professional, regulatory, reputational and cyber-related exposures. John has developed a proprietary strategic risk planning process that is adaptable for companies who have different risk management needs, from reducing coverage over time with more active management of their exposure to organizations who want to self-insure or manage primary exposures. SilverStone Group benchmarks and categorizes data analytics from each risk assessment performed to help existing and future clients learn from the uninsured mistakes of others.

John and his team are frequent contributors to trade journals and he serves as a public speaker for several professional associations each year to help healthcare and legal professionals fulfill continuing education requirements. He has received various professional certifications related to advising on and financing risk. John was honored as one of the top 40 under 40 professionals in 2005 by the Midlands Business Journal, an Omaha publication.

John’s family also upholds a tradition of volunteering, which he maintains by actively involving himself in the community with a special focus on causes supporting healthcare and education. Over the years, John and his wife have served on the board of directors of over 12 non-profit organizations in addition to helping fund raise for several charitable events. In his personal time, John enjoys traveling, hiking, yard work and spending time with his wife and two young children.

As the Director of Construction Risk Services, Jill is our point person for all construction-related insurance needs. She is a subject matter expert and provides leadership and guidance to our sales and service team. She plays an integral role in managing client and carrier relationships while working hard to achieve favorable pricing, coverage and claim scenarios.

Jill began her career at SilverStone Group 28 years ago, and feels as though she has grown up here. She loves looking around the office and seeing faces that were here on the day she started. When asked what she loves most about her work she shared, “It’s impossible for me to pick a favorite thing about SilverStone Group. At the end of the day, it’s all about the people for me. The clients, the co-workers, the carriers. The people make every day, the best day.”

She may love the people at SilverStone Group, but Jill also has a special place in her heart for animals. She volunteers with Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, caring for orphaned fox squirrels and releasing them back into the wild. Now that’s our kind of people!

Brett Sesker is someone who will go above and beyond for his clients. Brett’s 26 years of experience in Group Health and Welfare plans serve him well in underwriting, product development, project management, alternate funding and managed care. He spent 10 of those 26 years as an underwriter with a major insurance company, an experience, he says, that he “lived to tell about” and which gave him excellent insight into plan design and implementation of group benefits programs.

With specialties in small and large group risk management, alternate funding (including minimum premium and self-funding) product development, Medicare, compliance, project management, worksite benefits, medical, dental, life, disability, vision and leave management benefit programs, Brett is able to provide comprehensive benefits plans to his clients. Because he knows that every client is different, he enjoys getting to know each one individually as he develops a customized approach to meet their needs. Brett says that meeting the day-to-day challenges of creating understandable and valuable benefits programs allows him to learn new skills and remain open to thinking “outside the box.”

Brett served as a board member for Junior Achievement, Elkhorn Public Schools Foundation and the Wellness Council of the Midlands (WELCOM). He is an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan while living in the great State of Nebraska.

Kirk has always had a strong desire and passion to see people succeed. As a former classroom teacher, he understands how important it is for each client to be treated as an individual whose situation may differ from other clients. That's the reason the Associates in the Entrepreneurial division at SilverStone Group work so hard to develop good relationships with their clients -- because you can't really help someone until you know the challenges they face.

Kirk views each day as a new opportunity to earn the right to do business with his valued clients. The Entrepreneurial Team works with a variety of businesses and each engagement requires expertise, strategies and risk management solutions tailored to the client's individual needs. Dealing with multiple clients requires a team of organized and efficient professional to assist with the array of tasks and questions that come up on a daily basis. The Entrepreneurial Team prides itself on meeting these challenges and offering comprehensive coverage and competitive pricing, along with the outstanding service that clients expect.

A native of Council Bluffs, Kirk has an extensive knowledge of the city and is actively involved in numerous civic projects including non-profit risk management. He was involved in the St. Paul Partnership Training program, which provided him with extensive product knowledge on a wide range of prospects. Kirk says he is not the type of person who can sit back and read about what's going on in his community. 1To be considered for the annual PLANADVISER list, advisers had to either submit information and references or be nominated and enter the award process for the 2014 PLANSPONSOR Retirement Plan Adviser of the Year – individual, team or multi-office team. PLANADVISER did not consider advisers who did not submit information to PLANADVISER or were not nominated for the award.  Nominees were then asked to complete a form, providing various details about their practice. PLANADVISER did not consider input from clients of Advisers. Advisers could also, for the first time, submit such information unsolicited, although not to be considered for the awards. The PLANADVISER Top 100 Retirement Plan Advisers list is drawn solely from a smaller set of quantitative factors and information supplied by the advisers themselves.

2The designation is awarded annually by the National Association of Board Certified Advisory Practices (NABCAP). The selection process is based on a proprietary system whose ultimate goal is to provide investors and advisors a trusted standard of excellence to help guide them within the financial services industry. The evaluation process assesses 20 categories of practice management, which include areas such as customer service, risk/investment planning philosophy, credentials, team dynamics, fee/cost structure, and average AUM per client among other areas.

3The Carl G. Mammel Award is sponsored by SilverStone Group and presented annually to one or more SilverStone Group associates for their outstanding achievement in Sales and/or Marketing. Recipients are nominated by their peers.

John works with both private and public entities to construct alternative funding strategies, including captives, reinsurance, self-insurance and various pre-funding structures. His work with reinsurance intermediaries and direct insurers develops unique strategies that reduce overall client costs.

After serving as an officer in the US Navy, John joined Nelson Insurance in 1965. He has since served as President of The Redland Group (the holding company of Nelson Insurance) and SilverStone Group. His experience also includes serving as the COO of six insurance companies that specialized in tailored programs for associations with difficult risks.

John is a member of many professional associations, such as Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters, Chief Executives' Organization, Nebraska Presidents' Organization and World Presidents' Organization. He also serves on numerous non-profit boards, including Bellevue University, Joslyn Art Museum Foundation and the Durham Museum.

Because of his active service participation throughout the area, John has earned several prestigious awards: the Boy Scouts of America Citizen of the Year Award, he was named to the Omaha Business Hall of Fame and also inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 2010. He also received an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from Bellevue University in 2000, the United Way Citizen of the year in 2002 and was the 2003 King of Ak-Sar-Ben.

John derives deep satisfaction from working at SilverStone Group, mostly, he says, because it's rewarding to see how the firm's Associates come together to solve complex problems, listen to each other's viewpoints and discuss issues thoroughly until a final resolution is reached. He describes SilverStone Group as a collegial company that fosters inquiry and open, honest communication on all matters.
